Looker Studio is a free, browser-based tool from Google for turning data into interactive reports and dashboards. It was previously known as Google Data Studio. Many small businesses and marketing teams use it because it connects easily to spreadsheets and other common data sources.

What Looker Studio does

At a basic level, it lets you:

  • Connect to a data source, such as a Google Sheet.
  • Add charts, tables and scorecards to a canvas.
  • Add filters and date controls so viewers can explore.
  • Share the report with a link, like a shared document.

Common business uses

Marketing performance reports

Summarize spend, clicks, conversions and cost per conversion by channel or campaign.

Sales overviews

Track revenue, orders and top products over time.

Operations tracking

Monitor support tickets, delivery times or inventory levels.

Client reporting

Freelancers and agencies share a consistent monthly report instead of emailing spreadsheets.

The building blocks

ElementPurpose
Data sourceWhere the numbers come from
DimensionsCategories you group by (date, product, channel)
MetricsNumbers you measure (revenue, sessions, orders)
ScorecardOne headline number, optionally compared to a prior period
ControlsDate ranges and drop-down filters for viewers

Getting started with a spreadsheet

  1. Prepare a tidy Google Sheet with one header row.
  2. Create a new report and add the sheet as a data source.
  3. Check that each field has the right type (date, number, text).
  4. Add a scorecard for your main metric, then a time-series chart.
  5. Add a date range control and test it.

Limitations to keep in mind

Looker Studio is excellent for reporting, but it is not a replacement for careful data preparation. If the source sheet has errors, the dashboard will display them beautifully. Very large datasets can also make reports slow.

Where it fits in your learning

We recommend learning spreadsheet basics first, then dashboards. Our Looker Studio week focuses on dashboard design principles that also apply to other tools. For a tool-agnostic guide, see how to build your first business dashboard.
